Jazz great Fred Anderson dead at 81

CHICAGO, (UPI) -- Chicago jazz legend and tenor saxophonist Fred Anderson, who had a heart attack June 14, died Thursday at the age of 81.

Anderson, the owner of the famed Velvet Lounge on Chicago's South Side, created a "rugged, craggy musical language that influenced generations of 'free jazz' improvisers," the Chicago Tribune reported.

In the 1960s, Anderson formed the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, and through the Velvet Lounge he promoted the careers of a generation of jazz musicians

, including flutist Nicole Mitchell, percussionist Hamid Drake, and trumpeters Corey Wilkes and Maurice Brown, the Tribune said.

Anderson "was the essence of music in Chicago. He was all music, all the time," Chicago saxophonist and Anderson compatriot Jimmy Ellis told the Tribune.
