Bloomfield, Conn. (WTNH) - In Bloomfield, some packages are being delivered to an organization devoted to caring for and helping some very hardworking, military dogs.

Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation trains and provides guide dogs to the visually impaired. This Foundation says they understand the stresses on and the importance of military canines serving overseas.

All the gifts are going overseas to make a merry and safe Christmas for dozens of military dogs in Iraq and Afghanistan. And all $2,000 worth of it was donated by people who know all about working dogs and the employees of Fidelco.

"So this is our way in the season of hope and renewal to give back to the troops who have given so much to us. If we can help them by helping their canines, we have done our job," says Addrienne Sullivan of Fidelco.

Military canines need many things many people may not think about. They need cooling vests for working in hot climates, and doggles which are doggie goggles to protect the dogs' eyes from sun and sand. They also need treats and toys, because play is just as important as work.

"They work hard when they're rewarded, and dogs like to play, so a reward for a working dog is playtime, so we've got some specifically approved toys that the military canines can use in the field to relieve the stress," says Eliot Russman of Fidelco.

Everyone wants the dogs to be happy and focused, because in Iraq and Afghanistan, dogs are truly a man's best friend, and a lot of human lives depend on them. That's why give2thetroops.org has a whole canine operation. They will get all these presents to the combat units that need them.

"A lot of people don't realize that our military working dogs are in danger, they are bomb sniffing dogs, they are looking for improvised explosive devices," says Andi Grant of Give2TheTroops Founder.
