New York -- Madison Square Garden will be reopened Friday after an asbestos scare forced the postponement of an National Basketball Association game Tuesday night, according to a statement released by the team.

"After receiving assurance from the city and environmental experts regarding the safety of the arena for our customers and employees, all events at Madison Square Garden, beginning with Friday night's Knicks game, will go on as scheduled," the statement said.

"We would like to thank the city for their assistance in this matter, and appreciate the patience of our fans."

The scare was triggered sometime after Monday night's New York Rangers hockey game when, during overnight maintenance, "which included cleaning asbestos-related materials in the attic above the ceiling, some debris fell into the arena," the team said Tuesday.

The New York Knicks, who will host the Washington Wizards on Friday, were scheduled to play the Orlando Magic Tuesday.

The game will be rescheduled.
