Marie Callender's chicken meals in recall
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa, (UPI) -- The Iowa maker of Marie Callender's Cheesy Chicken and Rice frozen meals says it is recalling them after an investigation of 29 cases of salmonellosis.

ConAgra Foods Packaged Foods LLC of Council Bluffs was informed of the investigation by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which said people in 14 states had been diagnosed, with at least eight of the patients having eaten the ConAgra product, a USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service release said Thursday.

The last reported case of the illness was on May 22, the release said.

The products subject to recall include 13-ounce packages of "Marie Callender's Cheesy Chicken & Rice White Meat Chicken and Broccoli over Rice Topped with Rich Cheddar Sauce."

Each package bears a label with establishment number "P-45" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Salmonella infections can be life-threatening for people with weak immune systems, including infants, the elderly, and people who have HIV infection or are undergoing chemotherapy, the FSIS release said.

The most common manifestations of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within 8 to 72 hours.
