Marines order MRAPs from General Dynamics

LONDON, Ontario, General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada will supply the U.S. Marines with 27 vehicles for the service's Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle program.

The order from the U.S. Marine Corps Systems Command for 21 RG-31 Mk5EM vehicles and six RG-31 Mk5E vehicles is worth $33.2 million, the company said Thursday.

The vehicles will be manufactured at BAE Systems Land Systems OMC of Benoni, South Africa. Deliveries to the Marines will be completed by April 2011.

The company said that upon completion of the order General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada would have delivered 1,679 RG-31 vehicles under the MRAP program.

The RG-31s are armored troop and cargo carriers designed to withstand the blasts of improvised explosive devices. The vehicles have a combat mass of about 37,500 pounds, including an 8,160-pound payload capacity and an operational range of 560 miles. They are designed to hold nine troops plus the driver.

The contract was signed through the Canadian Commercial Corporation, an agency of the Canadian government.
