Mayor in murder-suicide had money problems

DALLAS, The Texas mayor involved in a suspected murder-suicide may have been using a city-issued credit card to deal with personal money problems, officials say.

Jayne Peters and her 19-year-old daughter were found shot to death in their Coppell, Texas, home Tuesday. Police say they believe Jayne Peters shot her daughter and then herself, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Peters was having financial problems since her husband died in 2008, mourners at her funeral were told, and city officials reported she made more than $5,800 in charges on her city-issued credit card in the three months before her suicide, the newspaper said.

City Manager Clay Phillips said Peterson had promised for months to pay back funds spent for personal items she charged to the card but never did, the Morning News reported.

After months of being put off by Peterson, Phillip went to the city attorney and asked for an investigation, he said.

"We were at that point," he said of his mounting suspicions.
