After Butler hit a one-out homer to left off Dustin Moseley (2-2), three Kansas City relievers combined to throw four scoreless innings.
Joakim Soria came on in the ninth and gave up a leadoff single to Derek Jeter. After Curtis Granderson flew out to left and Mark Teixeira struck out, Alex Rodriguez singled Jeter to third.
Robinson Cano then grounded to second to end the game and give Soria his 32nd save.
Kansas City starter Kyle Davies (6-7) got the win with a five-inning effort during which he allowed three runs on seven hits.
Yuniesky Betancourt doubled home two runs in a three-run second to put Kansas City in front and the Yankees tied it in the third on RBI singles by Robinson Cano and Rodriguez, along with a run-scoring double from Lance Berkman.
