MLB: Kansas City 7, Baltimore 5
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Alex Gordon hit a three-run homer with two out in the ninth inning Friday, rallying the Kansas City Royals to a 7-5 victory over Baltimore.
The Royals were on the verge of losing their sixth straight game before putting together an unlikely two-out rally against Alfredo Simon (2-2).
After the first two batters of the inning grounded out, Rick Ankiel drew a walk off Simon and moved to third on a single by Wilson Betemit. That brought up Gordon, who took the first pitch for a ball and hit the second one over the wall in right to win it.
It was only the second home run of the season for Gordon, who likely became Kansas City's regular left fielder when the Royals traded Scott Podsednik to the Los Angeles Dodgers Wednesday.
Betemit had a two-run single during a three-run first, but the Orioles rallied twice and took the lead with a two-run eighth. Ty Wigginton drove in the tying run in that inning with a double and he scored the go-ahead tally on a fielder's choice grounder.
Blake Wood (1-2) got the win by working the top of the ninth.
Home plate umpire Wally Bell had to leave the game in the sixth due to heat exhaustion and dehydration.
