MINNEAPOLIS, May 29 (UPI) -- A double-play grounder off the bat of Joe Mauer accounted for the winning run Friday and Minnesota held on to edge Texas 2-1.

Kevin Slowey worked 6 2/3 solid innings in what was Minnesota's second straight victory. The Twins boosted their lead in the American League Central to 2 1/2 games over Detroit.

Slowey (6-3) allowed a run on six hits with five strikeouts. Jon Rauch gave up a two-out single to David Murphy in the ninth, but struck out Justin Smoak to end the game and earn his 11th save.

Mauer singled in Minnesota's first run in the third and Vladimir Guerrero tied it in the fourth with an RBI base hit.

The Twins then loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth against Colby Lewis (4-3) and Texas conceded a run in order to turn a double play on Mauer's grounder to second.

Texas put its first two batters on base in the seventh without scoring.
