A P.E.I. town's former treasurer was sent to jail Monday for stealing about $20,000 from her employer.
Kristie Robertson, 32, told the judge an addiction to prescription drugs led her to forge and cash almost two dozen cheques for thousands of dollars from Montague in eastern P.E.I..
She was working as the town's treasurer and data entry clerk last year when she began faking cheques.
The deceit came to light when Andrew Daggett, the town's administrator, discovered his signature had been forged on a cheque. He and councillor John MacFarlane must sign each cheque the town issues, so the pair began a wider investigation.
They found 22 cheques faked between January and April 2010 and the matter went to police.
Roberston was charged with eight fraud-related offences in February and pleaded guilty. On Monday, Judge Ben Taylor sentenced her to two months in jail and one year's probation.
Robertson has paid back $10,000 and has until the end of November to pay back the rest of the money.
