Nadal wins among upsets in London
LONDON, (UPI) -- Rafael Nadal barely scrapped by but Novak Djokovic and Andy Roddick were beaten Thursday at the Aegon Championships in London.
Nadal, the world No. 1, just shook off a challenge from No. 16-seeded Denis Istomin, escaping with a 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4 victory. Nadal had five service breaks in the match, including the final game to advance to the fourth round.
Nadal won 112 points to 111 for Istomin, who attacked with nine aces.
The second-seeded Djokovic was taken out by Xavier Malisse 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Malisse had four breaks while dropping serve only once.
Roddick, the No. 4 seed, went out in straight sets to No. 14-seeded Dudi Sela 6-4, 7-6 (10-8). Roddick had 10 aces but was unable to solve Sela's serve, winning just 17 points over 11 games.
Fifth-seeded Marin Cilic was also beaten with Michael Llodra taking a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 decision.
And, in what may turn out to be another upset when the match is finished Friday, third-seeded Andy Murray was tied 4-6, 6-1, 3-3 with Mardy Fish when play Thursday was called because of darkness.
Also Thursday, seventh-seeded Sam Querrey got by Marcel Granollers 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) and No. 8-seeded Feliciano Lopez topped ninth-seeded Julien Benneteau 6-2, 6-4.
