New counters may use light to fight MRSA
ALBUQUERQUE, -- To fight methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, U.S. researchers say they are developing anti-bacterial counter tops that may be sterilized using light.
Scientists at the University of New Mexico are working on an anti-microbial surface that is inhospitable to MRSA, but won't harm people or animals.
The polymer-type material has been effective at killing bacteria display bacteria-killing activity with the addition of light. This anti-bacterial counter tops may be sterilized using regular fluorescent lights, the scientists say.
MRSA causes an estimated 19,000 U.S. deaths annually and $3 to 4 billion in healthcare costs. New anti-microbial and antibiotic agents are few, only new three classes of antibiotics have been developed since the 1950s, the scientists say.
The findings were presented at the AVS 57th International Symposium & Exhibition, in Albuquerque.
