NHL conference finals to open Sunday
NEW YORK, (UPI) -- The National Hockey League announced Thursday that both the Eastern and Western Conference finals will begin Sunday.
Top-seeded San Jose will host Chicago to open the Western Conference finals at 3 p.m. EDT.
The opener of the Eastern Conference finals will send Montreal to either Boston or Philadelphia at 7 p.m.
Boston and Philadelphia will meet Friday in Game 7 of their conference semifinal series. Philadelphia is trying to become only the third team in NHL history to overcome a 3-0 deficit and win a best-of-seven playoff series.
The Boston-Philadelphia matchup will be the fourth Game 7 in this year's playoffs, and in each of the other three deciding games the visiting team has won. Philadelphia will be the visitor Friday.
Two of the other Game 7 showdowns played this season have been won by Montreal, which as No. 8 seed has eliminated Washington and Pittsburgh. Detroit downed Phoenix in the other Game 7.
The rest of the schedule for the conference finals will be announced Friday.
