Obama again postpones Indonesia trip
WASHINGTON, (UPI) -- President Barack Obama has again postponed his trip to Indonesia, Australia and Guam, the White House announced Friday.
In a statement issued by the White House, spokesman Robert Gibbs said Obama spoke Thursday with Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to inform them of the change in plans.
"President Obama expressed his deep regret that he has to postpone his trip to Asia that was scheduled for later this month," the statement said. "The President looked forward to rescheduling so that he can visit both countries soon."
Gibbs said Obama "underscored his commitment to our close alliance with Australia and our deepening partnership with Indonesia" and plans to hold bilateral meetings with Rudd and Yudhoyono during the upcoming G20 meeting in Canada.
This is the second time this year the president has postponed the trip. The first time came as Congress prepared to hold final votes on healthcare reform legislation.
Although Friday's White HOuse statement did not indicate a reason for the latest postponement, the administration has been focused on the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
During an address Thursday to an audience at the U.S. State Department, Obama announced will visit India in November. A date for the India trip was not announced.
