Ohio testing 'green' highway noise wall

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Ohio transportation officials said they are testing a highway noise wall made from vegetation as an alternative to concrete.

Officials with the Ohio Department of Transportation said the 400-foot Green Noise Wall planned for a stretch of westbound Interstate 70 near Columbus, will consist of 70-pound bags stacked atop one another that will sprout plants and grass, The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported Monday.

The officials said they hope the two-year experiment will prove to be an effective alternative to concrete noise walls.

"It is like a Chia (Pet) wall -- basically filling bags with dirt and seed, watering it and watching it grow up and out," ODOT spokesman Scott Varner said. "And much like the novelty plant on the windowsill, it will take some care in the beginning, and ongoing maintenance."
