Seventeen police forces across Ontario will split $15 million in provincial funding, over two years, to deal with guns and gangs.

The money will be used to increase support for specialized police "gang" units.

About $1 million will go to municipal and First Nations police forces not currently involved in the guns and gangs strategy.

The provincial plan is modelled on the Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy, and has led to more than 1,100 arrests and 2,000 criminal charges in three years.

In addition, police across Ontario have removed more than 200 illegal guns from the streets since 2007.

Thunder Bay Chief Robert Herman, president of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, says the funding will help get illegal guns out of communities.

The regional police forces receiving funding are:

Amherstberg,
Brantford,
Durham region,
Halton region,
Hamilton,
Kingston,
Lasalle,
London,
Niagara region,
Nishnawbe-Aski,
Ottawa, Peel region,
Sudbury,
Thunder Bay,
Waterloo,
Windsor and York region.
