Panel orders new investigation of Ozawa

TOKYO, A judicial committee ordered prosecutors Thursday to reopen an investigation into Ichiro Ozawa, former secretary-general of the Democratic Party of Japan.

Prosecutors refused to indict Ozawa for wrongdoing involving alleged false 2007 financial reports for a political fund. The finding by the No. 1 Committee for the Inquest of the Prosecution means the Tokyo Office of Public Prosecution must conduct another investigation but the case will be closed if prosecutors once again refuse to bring charges, Kyodo News Service reported.

Ozawa could also face charges related to reporting of funds in 2005 and 2006.

From 2006 to 2009, Ozawa served as the leader of the Democratic Party of Japan. Under his leadership, the DPJ won control of the upper house of parliament in 2007.

He resigned as party leader last year and as secretary-general this year.
