Pioneer Resists Sat Radio Interoperability

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Audio electronics manufacturer Pioneer North America told the Federal Communications Commission last week that radio receivers should not be required to have either satellite or terrestrial digital reception capability.

The Pioneer comments are part of the FCC's inquiry into whether satellite radio devices should also contain reception capabilities for competing services, such as HD Radio. In its filing, Pioneer said such a requirement "would limit the breadth of radio product offerings to consumers, limiting consumer choices."

Pioneer also said any requirement to include terrestrial digital technology in satellite radios would limit what radio component suppliers' products are designed into radios. That would give "some form of oligopoly to component manufacturers that incorporate iBiquity technology. This could yield predatory practices on the part of the technology vendors," the company said.
