The Governor General has named Charlottetown Police Chief Paul Smith an Order of Merit of the Police Forces.

The order was created in 2000 to recognize exceptional service and community involvement. Forty-four appointments were announced Monday, including eight officers and 36 members. Smith said the appointment was a surprise to him, and he's not sure why his name was put forward.

"I have no idea. I couldn't tell you," said Smith.

"It's just a culmination of things that have gone on over the course of my career and I'm very humbled to get this kind of recognition."

Smith will officially become an officer of the order of merit at a ceremony in Ottawa on June 8.
