Pittsburgh police have arrested a 42-year-old woman accused of injecting herself with drugs meant for an ill teenager at Children's Hospital.
According to police reports, Karen Remsing, of Vancouver, Wash., disconnected a computerized intravenous injection tube supplying medication to her 15-year-old son on Sunday. Police said Remsing then used the medication, a sedative, to fill several hypodermic needles taken from a hospital supply cart and injected herself.
Hospital staff said they found Remsing in the room, passed out on a couch. After finding the needles and blood on the counter and Remsing's clothing, administrators called police
Remsing's husband was heartbroken when he heard about the arrest. He said Remsing is a caring mother who works out of state as a nurse to pay for the treatments for their chronically ill son in Pittsburgh.
Channel 4 Action News' Janelle Hall reported that Remsing told detectives she took the medication because she was tired from not having slept in 48 hours. Police said Remsing also told them that she was depressed and was a recovering drug addict.
Hospital personnel told police that Remsing tried to reconnect the IV tube back into the machine, but did so improperly, causing an air bubble in the line. The potentially fatal air bubble did not enter the teen's body, police said. Hospital personnel properly reconnected the IV once Remsing was discovered.
Police said Remsing was taken to Allegheny County Jail on $75,000 bond and faces charges including possession of a controlled substance and endangering the welfare of children.
She has also been banned from Children's Hospital and will be arrested for trespassing if she returns, hospital police said.
