A postal strike that could start on Wednesday will make it more difficult for people on social assistance on P.E.I. to receive cheques from the government.
If the mail stops, the postal union has offered to deliver social assistance cheques but Bob Creed, director of social programs, told CBC News Thursday P.E.I. is not able to take advantage of the offer.
Canada Post needed to have the cheques May 12 for the plan to work, but the cheques will not be ready until the near the end of the month.
"Producing cheques May 10th or May 11th, that far in advance of June 1st, it would be really difficult for the province. It didn't work for P.E.I.," said Creed.
Creed is encouraging clients to sign up for direct deposit. That option has been available to Islanders on social assistance since April.
If clients don't want to do this, Creed said other ways to get these cheques will be announced, in the event of a disruption.
