Ontario Provincial Police officers stopped and checked more than one million vehicles during the 2010-11 RIDE program and charged 294 people with impaired driving — virtually the same as during last year's campaign.

More than 850 people stopped had blood alcohol levels in the warning range, or other violations that led to licence suspensions.

A total of 5,011 charges were laid, the OPP said on Tuesday.

The OPP numbers apply to the entire province. The campaign was carried out between Nov. 26 and Jan. 2.

In the 2009-10 holiday campaign, the OPP stopped about the same number of vehicles as 2010-11 and laid 299 alcohol-related charges.

The number of licence suspensions of drivers found in the warning range, or for other violations, in 2009 was 746.

"While this year's Festive RIDE program is over, driving impaired continues to be an issue," said OPP Deputy Commissioner Larry Beechey in a news release.

"The OPP ... will be conducting regular RIDE programs all year long to reinforce this important message," he said.
