He's played a lot of shady characters, but now Robert De Niro is joining forces with the right side of the law by producing a cop drama for CBS.

The 67-year-old Oscar-winning actor and crime writer Richard Price ("The Color of Money," HBO's "The Wire") have sealed a deal with the network for "Rookies," a gritty series about six newbie cops who are sent into high-crime areas, according to the Hollywood Reporter. De Niro and Price previously teamed up on the 1993 film "Mad Dog and Glory."

"Rookies" will be produced by De Niro's Tribeca Prods., and besides being part of the company's two-year-old overall deal with CBS TV studios, the project could also add another crime series to the CBS lineup.

Both "Criminal Minds" and "The Mentalist" currently air on the network, though "Rookies" is expected to be edgier because of Price's street-savvy writing style.
