Sara Lee CEO says she had a stroke
DOWNERS GROVE, Ill., (UPI) -- U.S. food giant Sara Lee Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Brenda Barnes said Monday that she is recovering from a stroke, ending weeks of rumors.
"I know there has been a lot of speculation … so I want to take the opportunity to provide some details," Barnes said in a statement. "I suffered a stroke a few weeks ago, and I am now in the process of recuperating," MarketWatch reported.
Sara Lee said Chief Financial Officer Marcel Smith would take over as CEO while Barnes recovers. Independent board director James Crown will take over the chairman's duties, the company said.
"We are pleased to know that Brenda is on the mend," Crown said.
In May, the company said Barnes would take a medical leave of absence, but did not specify the reason.
