A man accused of setting a fire that killed a couple and their four-month-old son in La Ronge, Sask., has pleaded guilty to three counts of criminal negligence causing death.
Blake Norman faced three counts of manslaughter and one of arson in the deaths of Justin Charles, 20, Marsha McKenzie, 19, and their child, Jeremy.
He was allowed Monday to plead guilty to the lesser charges in a Prince Albert court. The Crown accepted that Norman was criminally negligent for not making sure that a fire he had set to a box spring in a hallway was out before he left.
Norman has already served 19 months in custody. At the request of the Crown and defence, the judge imposed a sentence of time already served and two years probation, meaning Norman will not serve any more jail time.
The sentence didn't please family spokesperson Kelly Anderson. "The Crown was a little lenient on him here," said Anderson. "The sentence is just appalling, it's too lenient, and he should be locked up. He should be locked up. He's not a good person."
The couple and their baby died after a fire broke out in their apartment block in late May 2009.
Firefighters discovered the father and son dead in their suite, while McKenzie died later in hospital.
Several other people in the building suffered minor injuries.
Norman is a former member of the La Ronge Ice Wolves of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.
