Sauerkraut plant roof collapse kills 1
FREMONT, Ohio, (UPI) -- An Ohio sauerkraut factory will remain closed while a government agency investigates a roof collapse that killed a worker, company officials said Thursday.
The Fremont Co. will stay closed until U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration engineers confirm other company production areas are safe, the company said.
The company, 40 miles southeast of Toledo, makes sauerkraut and bottles ketchup and barbecue sauce.
The concrete roof collapsed as workers for B&W Welding replaced support columns inside a small Fremont Co. building, Police Chief Tim Wiersma said.
The collapse, which also injured three workers, occurred when the main support beam running the length of the sauerkraut production area failed, WTOL-TV, Toledo, reported.
Fremont Fire Chief Daniel DeVanna said OSHA would likely determine why the beam failed.
Fremont Co. spokesman Chris Smith said there were no known problems with the roof and the welding work was not the type of major project that requires permits.
