Strong quake rumbles off Sumatra Island
JAKARTA, (UPI) -- A powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the Aceh coast on Indonesia's Sumatra Island Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
There was no immediate report of damage, officials told Indonesian news agency Antara.
The epicenter was about 178 miles south-southeast of Banda Aceh on Sumatra, 234 miles northwest of Sibolga, also on Sumatra, and 390 miles west of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the USGS said.
The earthquake was about 38 miles deep.
The Indonesian Meteorological, Geological and Climatology Agency issued a tsunami warning, which later was lifted, news agencies reported.
Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because it sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, Kyodo said. Last year, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake killed 1,115 people in West Sumatra.
