There had been some expectation, at recently as last week, that Fox executives would have something major to announce on Monday about the immediate future of their 10-year-old franchise, American Idol, now decimated by the loss of original judges Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell, the announced departure of Ellen DeGeneres and apparent dismissal of Karen DioGuardi.
So there were either going to be some major additions to the judging panel, or it was going to become the Randy Jackson “Dawg” Show (the last man sitting still has a year to go on his current Idol contract).
Though one could safely assume the former, the exact composition of that new judging panel will remain, for the time being, unknown. Though speculation has been rampant regarding possible candidates, from Aerosmith’s Steve Tyler to superstar diva Jennifer Lopez, Fox chairman Peter Rice could only, if ingenuously and apologetically, stonewall.
“The only thing I can tell you with absolute certainty now is no one has signed a deal who was not on Idol last year. That is the truth as we sit here today.
“Much of the information that’s been written is accurate, and some of it is wildly inaccurate. I truly wish that we had been able to walk out a panel of judges for next year. And I am truly sorry that’s not going to happen.”
Rice did go on to say he expected to have the panel in place by the end of September, in time to participate in the already-in-progress cross-country auditions for the upcoming season.
