Kabul, Afghanistan -- Taliban militants killed five Afghan village elders and wounded four others after firing a rocket-propelled grenade at the group's vehicle Wednesday, according to a statement from NATO's International Security Assistance Force.
"This is a terrible tragedy and demonstrates the insurgents' total disregard for the lives of village elders who bring guidance and leadership to the people of Afghanistan," ISAF Director James Dawkins said in the statement. "Our thoughts and concerns are with the victims' families of this horrendous act."
The group had been traveling in Afghanistan's Bal Chiragh district in Faryab province, it said, a region that has experienced comparatively less recent violence than other parts of the country.
One of the injured elders was transferred to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
