Bourbonnais police are investigating the crash that killed a 46-year-old special education aide.

Witnesses say Thomas Dunn, Jr. pushed an autistic student out of the way of an oncoming bus Monday.

Dunn was hit by a River Valley Metro Mass Transit bus and later died at a Kankakee hospital.

It happened near the Camelot Therapeutic Day School in Bourbonnais, where he worked.

Dunn had been the student's school aide for a year and a half.

The teen's mother says her son admired and looked up to Dunn and is taking his death very hard.

Dunn leaves behind two children, who are now in the care of relatives.

School officials are making arrangements to rename the school's playground in memory of Dunn.

Town officials say Dunn was an active, caring member of the community. "You can't replace him," said Interim Bourbonnais Police Chief Greg Kunce. "He rescued dogs. He was loved by the community. He will be missed by the community."
