Teenage U.S. sailor reunited with brother
SAINT-DENIS, Réunion, (UPI) -- A U.S. teenager on a world-circling sailing attempt arrived on an Indian Ocean island after a rescue when her ship's mast broke in high seas, authorities said.
Abby Sunderland was reunited with her brother at the French island of Reunion and said she intended to continue sailing, the BBC reported.
Her journey, which began in California in January, ended June 10 when 30-foot waves snapped her boat's mast in the southern Indian Ocean.
A French fishing boat rescued her two day later.
Sunderland was trying to best the record of her brother Zac, who sailed around the world solo at age 17, the BBC said.
She was aware of the risks, she said.
"Any sailor that goes out to the water knows that being hit by a rogue wave is a risk, no matter where you are," she said.
It is winter in the southern Indian Ocean, and weather conditions are presently at their most treacherous, the BBC reported.
Sunderland will travel from Reunion back to her home in Los Angeles, her family said.
