BATH TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Two sophomores from Walsh Jesuit High School survived a treacherous fall during a spiritual retreat at Camp Christopher in Bath Township on Wednesday afternoon.

Rescue workers say the two 15-year-old boys were climbing the side of a cliff when they lost their footing.

"We believe they fell 80 to 100 feet down and where they fell was in the remote part of the camp," said Fire Lieutenant George Seifert.

A call to 911 indicated one of the boys was in serious trouble.

"He's waking up but he's not really with it," said the caller, "he keeps passing out."

Bath Police Chief Michael McNeely says it appears the boys went into a free fall for about 50 feet, hit a patch of rock, then rolled the rest of the way.

Firefighters who responded to the accident say Camp Christopher, which is operated by Catholic Youth Services, is difficult to maneuver because of rough terrain.

"The terrain is very rocky, not stable," said Lt. Seifert. "There's a lot of down rocks, tree branches, tree limbs, very mossy, very slippery."

Lt. Seifert claims a prior call to Camp Christopher prepared his department for the difficult task of getting the boys out.

Med Flight was called to take one of the boys to Akron General Hospital. The teen is listed in serious condition according to his school principal. The other teen reportedly suffered only minor injuries.
