TYSONS CORNER, Va. -- "No. She's not crazy. She'd never do that. She loved that baby," said Russell Jackson, the next door neighbor to Carmela Dela Rosa. The 50-year-old woman has been charged with murder in the death of her granddaughter, 2-year-old Angelyn Ogdoc. Police say she threw the child off a six-floor outdoor walkway at Tysons Corner Center.
Fairfax County police say it happened Monday, November 29, at around 7:10 p.m. on a 50-foot high bridge leading from a parking garage to the food court.
When the fire department and emergency crew arrived, the child was conscious and alert. She was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. Officer Tawny Wright, spokeswoman for Fairfax County Police, says the child passed away around 4:30 Tuesday morning.
According to Wright, Dela Rosa was walking with two other family members when she picked up the child and tossed her off the bridge. Wright says it is unclear what prompted the woman to do it.
Dela Rosa was the child's maternal grandmother who cared for her while her mother was working. George Mason University officials confirm the mother, Kat Ogdoc, is an intern at the George Mason Inn. Her husband and Angelyn's father, James Ogdoc is a student at GMU and also holds a job. The child lived with her young parents in her other grandparent's home in the Pimmit Hills community of Falls Church.
"What's this world coming to? Oh, God love them," said a neighbor of the Ogdocs.
Dela Rosa appeared in Juvenile Domestic Relations Court via video conference Tuesday morning. She does not have an attorney and will be appointed one.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for January 4.
