Torontonians are welcoming the new year with parties, drinks and special meals.

Thousands of people were expected at Nathan Phillips Square on Friday night to see in the new year with a slew of stars onstage, including R&B singer Danny Fernandes.

Others planned to take in a show, walk around the city in the unseasonable 8 C weather (although there may be showers), enjoy a barbeque or stay home with family and friends.

Liquor stores did a booming business in the afternoon.

"You can get a bottle of sparkling wine for $10," the LCBO's Chris Layton said. "Or if you really feel like you want to celebrate, you can get a bottle of vintage champagne for $250."

Toronto police planned spot checks throughout the city to catch drunk drivers. But both the TTC and GO Transit were offering free rides, so drinkers wouldn't have to drive. GO trains were free as of 7 p.m., and the TTC planned to be free at midnight.

On Saturday, at least two New Year's levees will be held in the city. The lieutenant-governor's levee runs from noon until 2 p.m. at Fork York, and the City of Toronto levee will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at City Hall. Mayor Rob Ford and many councillors are expected to attend.
