A trial began Tuesday for a Covehead Road, P.E.I., man involved in a standoff with police in March.

A woman testified in Charlottetown provincial court she was in a house with Joel Lawrence Clow, 41, on March 7 when they got into an argument.

She said Clow had been drinking and had been worried about money for months, afraid that he would lose his fishing boat, his licence and his way of making a living.

The woman testified when she went to the bathroom, Clow pushed open the door, grabbed her by the hair, shook her head and said he was going to kill her.

She told the court that when she heard Clow going for his shotgun, she ran out of the house and down the road to call the police.

Six police cruisers and an emergency response team camped outside Clow's house for three hours while he refused to come out of his home. Two other men were inside the house at the time.

Police officers testified in court when Clow eventually came out of his home, he was belligerent, wild-eyed and swore at police, and had to be pushed to the ground during the arrest.

No one was hurt.

Police later found a shotgun in the attic.

Defence attorney Brendan Hubley suggested the woman concocted the story to see Clow sent to jail and said the woman left Clow's house only because he told her to leave.

Hubley also pointed out that it seemed strange that even though the woman said she was afraid Clow would shoot her, she did not warn the others in the house or the neighbours that he had a gun.

Clow faces seven charges including assault, uttering threats, possession of an unregistered shotgun and careless storage of a firearm.
