NEWBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Some children went trick or treating in York County Thursday night only to find a real body.

The children were going door-to-door in the Conewago Valley mobile home park in Newberry Township when they found a 68-year-old man who had shot himself outside his front door.

The body wasn't noticed until after 6 p.m. Thursday, after trick-or-treating began. Police said it's possible some people thought the body was a Halloween decoration.

Once the children found the body, they alerted neighbors, who called police.

"Our primary goal at first was to protect public safety to make sure no more children were exposed to it and we tried to limit the exposure of the neighborhood as well," said Newberry Township Police Chief John Snyder.

Police said the man who lived in the mobile home was very ill, lived alone and did not want to go to a hospital or nursing home.
