Tropical Storm Alex moves toward Yucatan
MIAMI, (UPI) -- Tropical Storm Alex, the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, was headed for Yucatan late Saturday, the National Hurricane Center said.

Forecasters predicted 4 to 8 inches of rain in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and parts of Belize, Guatemala and Honduras through Sunday with as much as 15 inches falling in isolated areas. That could bring dangerous flash floods and mudslides.

At 4 p.m. CDT, Alex was moving west at 12 mph and was expected to make landfall in Yucatan within a few hours. Tropical storm warnings were posted for the east coast of Yucatan, coastal Belize and islands off Honduras, with a tropical storm watch for Honduras.

The long-range forecast had Alex moving across the Yucatan Peninsula early Sunday and then into the Gulf of Mexico where it could gain enough strength to become the season's first hurricane.

The storm was predicted to lose strength overland and regain it in the Gulf of Mexico, possibly becoming the season's first hurricane.

If Alex remains on its current track, it would make landfall in northeastern Mexico near Brownsville, Texas, sometime Thursday.
