Turkey makes fans, trouble in Ill.

LAKE BLUFF, Ill., A turkey has been making trouble for motorists in a suburban Chicago community but residents said they have become fond of the local bird celebrity.

Jackie Gronau, 26, whose parents own gift store Peg Ann Kompany in Lake Bluff, Ill., said the store has sold about 450 buttons and 350 T-shirts sporting pictures of the male turkey, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Wednesday.

"A little girl came in here the other day and sang us a 10-minute rendition of her 'Sparkles the Turkey' song," Gronau said.

Police said the turkey, which was first spotted hanging around a busy intersection in May, has only been tied to one traffic accident and investigators said the accident was mostly attributable to a distracted youth.

The turkey, nicknamed "Jeff," "Sparkles" and "Tom" by residents, has thus far managed to evade police and Garon Fyffe, director of A-B-C Humane Wildlife Control of Arlington Heights, Ill.

"The bum rap on turkeys is that they're dumb. They are very intelligent," Fyffe said. "I don't know if I'll outsmart it, but I'll outluck it and I'll do things it won't expect."
