U.S. kayaker missing in Canada found
ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland, (UPI) -- A Canadian Coast Guard helicopter has found one of two American kayakers reported missing in Canadian waters, authorities said.
A 62-year-old kayaker from Michigan was picked up on the shore of one of the Horse Islands about 12 miles from the north coast of Newfoundland's Baie Verte Peninsula, The Globe and Mail reported Saturday.
The man's companion, a 63-year-old also from Michigan, has yet to be found though his kayak was spotted on the edge of the island, the newspaper said.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Boyd Merrill said the two men started paddling from the Baie Verte area in clear weather.
But the weather deteriorated and the two men were separated when one of the kayaks flipped, Merrill said.
The search started around 7 a.m. Saturday when the men activated an emergency beacon, The Globe and Mail reported.
