U.S. pressures Pakistan on militants
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, (UPI) -- The Obama administration has warned Pakistan it must strike Islamic militants after the failed Times Square car bombing, U.S. and Pakistani sources say.

The New York Times reports the U.S. military commander in Afghanistan, Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, met with Pakistani military chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani at his headquarters in Pakistan Friday. McChrystal urged Pakistan to quickly begin a military offensive against the Pakistani Taliban and al-Qaida in the North Waziristan tribal areas, the report said.

Faisal Shahzad, the suspect in the Times Square attack in New York City, has told U.S. officials he received training in the Pakistani region.

The U.S. and Pakistani sources, who asked for anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks, told the Times the new warning from the Obama administration was a departure from the relatively mild tone taken by Washington in recent months.

The Times said there is increasing debate in the administration about how to project U.S. military power into Pakistan, even the use of ground troops.
