Vancouver police are appealing for a driver to come forward after a 72-year-old woman was struck early Saturday morning by a car that sped off.

The woman was found with "very serious" injuries incurred as she crossed the street just before 11 a.m., police said.

She was rushed from the scene, at East 57th Avenue and Ross Street, to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Const. Jana McGuinness said the driver of an older model, silver four-door Honda Accord allegedly drove off without stopping.

Police are combing surrounding neighbourhoods for the car, canvassing residents and asking any eyewitnesses to contact them.

They have also notified RCMP in Burnaby, Surrey and Richmond with a description of the car.
