Vandeweghe earns surprise quarters berth
CARLSBAD, Calif., Qualifier Coco Vandeweghe surprised third-seeded Vera Zvonareva Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Mercury Insurance Open.
Vandeweghe has won two matches in a tournament for the first time on the WTA Tour. She was down a service break in the third set before rallying to defeat Zvonareva 2-6, 7-5, 6-4. That set up a quarterfinal meeting with Svetlana Kuznetsova.
In other second-round matches Thursday, Flavia Pennetta defeated Maria Kirilenko 6-4, 7-6 (7-5); Daniela Hantuchova won over Jie Zheng 6-2, 6-1; and Kuznetsova eliminated Sara Errani 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5.
Pennetta will face Samantha Stosur in the quarterfinals. Hantuchova will meet Alisa Kleybanova and Shahar Peer will play Agnieszka Radwanska.
