Winn-Dixie to pare down, closing 30 stores
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Southern U.S. grocer Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. said it would close 30 of its under-performing stores this year to adjust to a weak economic environment.
The Florida company also said it would consolidate its four operating regions into three and close down 120 managerial jobs at the corporate level.
The retailer currently operates 514 outlets.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Peter Lynch said the chain would "continue to operate in a particularly difficult economic and retail environment in the Southeast."
"We sincerely regret the impact this will have on some of our associates," he said.
The company said in a statement it would save up to $17 million in annual operating costs. It expected to close out the stores by the end of the first quarter of 2011.
