Woman admits to faking kidnapping
LOS ANGELES, (UPI) -- A Glendale, Calif., woman missing and claiming to have been kidnapped turned up Thursday saying she made up the story because of school stress, officials say.

Nancy Salas, 22, told Sgt. Luis Pasache of the Glendale Police Department she fabricated the story because of the stress she was under due to her family believing she was going to UCLA and would graduate in June, the Los Angeles Times reported.

UCLA said she had not been enrolled since 2008, the newspaper said.

Salas said the pressure of that situation made her leave.

Salas went missing Wednesday while on a run, and she turned up at a carpet store in Merced, Calif., around 11 a.m. asking employees to call 911 because she had been kidnapped at knife point, Merced police said.

Meanwhile, her family had reported her missing, prompting an intensive bloodhound and helicopter search of the rugged Chevy Chase Canyon where she had been running.

When police found out she had not been going to UCLA as parents and friends believed, investigators concluded she was leading a double life, the Times said.

No crime was committed in Glendale's jurisdiction by Salas and her family, Pasache said. As to what Salas told Merced police, Pasache said, "We're going to let them handle that."
