A Crown attorney is calling for jail time for a P.E.I. woman who stole more than $63,000 from the fast food restaurant where she worked.
John McMillan told P.E.I. Supreme Court that too many employers are being robbed by members of their own staff. It's time to step up the penalties and put the worst offenders behind bars, he said.
Frances Lamoureux, 57, was in court Thursday to plead guilty to stealing more than $63,000 from the A & W fast food restaurant she used to manage in Charlottetown.
After an internal audit, it was found Lamoureux stole all of the restaurant's bank deposits over 19 consecutive days in July 2010.
McMillan wants Lamoureux in jail for six to 12 months.
Defence lawyer Brendan Hubley asked for house arrest and community service, saying that was the penalty of 15 out of 20 similar cases in recent years.
Lamoureux told the court she was sorry, but wouldn't say what she did with the money or why she stole it.
She is now unemployed and has not paid the money back.
She will be back in Supreme Court Feb. 25 for sentencing.
