Yao Ming out for the season
HOUSTON, -- The Houston Rockets announced Friday that a stress fracture in the left ankle of Yao Ming would knock the seven-time all-star out for the rest of the season.
Yao has not played since Nov. 10 and was hoping to return this month. But his ankle did not improve and an MRI revealed the seriousness of the situation.
Houston team physician Dr. Walter Lowe said at a news conference Friday the "usual case" for such an injury would be surgery. He said, however, that Yao had not yet decided if he wants to have surgery.
Lowe said NBA players have returned from a stress fracture, but that there would be a risk of further injury if Yao does eventually play again.
"To say he's not at risk to continue to have stress fractures would be crazy," Lowe said. "So he is at a continued risk."
Yao played just five games this season after missing all of last year due to surgery on his left foot.
