Zoo staff rescue woman from Bow River
CALGARY - Staff at the Calgary Zoo are being hailed as heroes after a dramatic river rescue.
A woman cycling along a nearby river pathway fell into the frigid Bow River, and was desperately fighting the fast-moving current as she tried to get back to shore.
Three employees heard the woman's screams and rushed into the bitterly cold water to pull her to safety.
The zoo's new director of animal care, conservation and research Dr. Jake Veasey was one of the men who rushed to the woman's aid.
Veasey moved to Calgary a few weeks ago from Britain to start his new position.
Veasey says he didn't have time to think about what was going on, all he knew was that if they didn't get the woman out of the water fast, she would die.
He says he thought it was cold when he got here, but his dip in the river was even worse.
It was the second incident in less than a day involving flooding near the zoo.
On Wednesday night, four cyclists needed treatment for exposure after they were caught in waist-deep water while riding on a path along the river near the zoo.
