Here is my top list of thing to avoid!

  1. If it is free, it most likly got a chatch to it, like virus and malware.
  2. Stay away from porn sites.
  3. Stay away from Limewire.
  4. Do not look at emails from people you do not know!
  5. Do not software you have never hear of before or because you buddy from work recommend it!
  6. Stay away from online gambling and casinos.
  7. Antivirus scan all USB drives before copy file over.

That about it, scan you computer with a antivirus once a week and you should be fine!

Microsoft's antivirus software is free, no need to by anything. Get it here:
Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

I have a laptop and once a month I do maintenance, that includes:

  1. Running my antivirus scanner.
  2. Running my spyware and malware scanners.
  3. Run a disk cleanup.
  4. Run a check disk
  5. Run a defragment the drives.
  6. Empty browser history.
  7. Run CCleaner.
  8. Make sure all your software is updated. (windows update)
  9. Blow out all the vents with compressed air.
  10. Wipe everything down with a soft damp cloth.

I do think it my be a bit much but I just want to protect my investment.
Hope this help, and cross you finger that you finally learn how to maintain a computer!:fingersx:

Like stated above make sure you have a good anti-virus and anti-malware program installed, that is up to date and is using a real time scan. Here are some more tips that should help you:

Do this weekly:

  1. Run a disk scan to check for hard drive error.
  2. Run a disk defragmentation program.
  3. Run a disk clean up to delete unneeded files.
  4. Back up your files to a safe location that is not you computer, such as CDRs/DVDRs.
  5. Empty your desktop recycle bin.
  6. Delete your Internet history, browsing history, and cookies.
  7. Update your virus definitions.
  8. Run a full virus scan!

Every month:

  1. Check for updates for all your software.
  2. Delete/uninstall unneeded programs.
  3. blow out the dust from your computers vents.

Every 3 months

  1. Clean your keyboard.
  2. Clean your monitor.
  3. Clean your peripherals.

Refrain from downloading programs from sites that don't appear to be trusted. Do not be misled by browser pop ups. They generally will but the harmful programs on you computer once you clink them. Scan every email attachment you get and steer clear of opening email from unknown people.

That's all I go for now!
