TOKYO – Protesters in Tokyo are preparing to hold mass demonstrations against the use of nuclear power.

The Saturday protests will take place on the three-month anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that killed tens of thousands and caused one of the world's worst nuclear disasters.

The March 11 earthquake triggered a large tsunami along Japan's northeast coast that damaged nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant. The damaged reactors have spewed large amounts of radiation into the environment near the plant.

The quake and tsunami killed more than 23,000 people, with 90,000 others still living in shelters.

Also Saturday, embattled Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan is scheduled to visit a northern region that was heavily damaged by the disasters.
