The Proper way to CW600S/P "Standby Mode" and "Upgrade Procedure"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For all of you CW600S/P owners/newbies out there, after many hours of research and experience, it occured to me that there wasn't enough details in the setup procedures for newbie's posted in the forums including the "How To Guides," much of the information in the forums don't even specify if it's for a "Regular" or "Premium" model, this is where mistakes are made so I wanted to share the details with you who may have questions, doubts and fear of screwing something up. I too was scared when I first set out but it's very simple once you get the hang of it!

I own only "Premium" models but have noticed that there isn't much difference between the two except for certain features such as memory capacity, channel and satellite info capacity and maybe some other small features. The basics of the "Upgrade" procedure should apply to either model.

The latest Loader program v1.06 should work for either model. Always take caution when selecting files to download and install, if you aren't sure, it's time to take time and do your homework, read, read and read before proceding, make sure to post questions in the appropriate forum pertaining to your specific question otherwise you may not receive an answer. You should be able to find an answer to nearly every question by reading the posts.

Read these instructions carefully, follow them step by step and you should have no problems.

A/V= "audio/video" (typically RCA type color coded component cables)
STB= "set top box" (satellite receiver of any kind)
LNBF= "low noise block feedhorn" (refers to commonly used Ku-Band devices)
PC= "IBM compatible computer" (laptop or desktop)
Null Modem= "serial cable that has wires crossed over"

NOTE:
Always do the upgrades/downloads/uploads with the lnbf coax cable disconnected from the receiver, "when the lnbf coax cable is disconnected, it provokes the receiver to the proper standby mode "--:--"
.....not the "BOOT" mode, unsatisfactory results may occur using the "BOOT" mode.

You only need one file to make this box work, use the latest/current "bin" file available. Keep it simple and take your time! Many people make mistakes by downloading the wrong files that belong to other models, if this happens, you may render the receiver useless, permanently! Make sure you use the proper file for your "regular" or "Premium." They are different and will NOT work if the wrong file is downloaded to the STB.

To begin, do a "factory default" first, this is done in the receiver's onscreen Menu (must be connected to TV to see what you're doing), next, turn off STB and then power off at the back panel switch. (always make A/V and coax connections/disconnections to TV and satellite receiver with them unplugged from power, otherwise may cause damage to receiver and/or TV, the receiver power switch on back panel is sufficient to power off.) Now disconnect all TV A/V, coax and/or AC-3 Dolby optic cables from TV, etc. except for the null modem serial cable which connection is made in the next step.

With PC off/shut down, connect the serial/modem cable,,,only null modem cable should be connected from receiver to pc at this time, (serial /modem cable connections and disconnections should always be made with the pc turned off, otherwise it may damage the resource chip on motherboard) now start up the pc and open the loader program and have the proper "bin" update file and com port selected (in this order)....double check the com port settings for both the pc and the loader before proceeding to download (com ports should match, i.e.; com1 to com1 or which ever one is set for usage by your pc), if you are not sure, you can check it in the "Windows Device Manager."

Now turn on the STB power from back panel switch, wait for it to completely boot up, give it adequate time, it should default to the time display; "12:00" or "0000", then press the power button on front panel and it should go right to the standby mode "--:--". then start the download process by clicking "Start" in the loader program. It should work flawlessly. Let it complete the process until it displays "-end" then turn off STB by back panel power switch, close the loader program and shut down PC, disconnect the serial/modem cable, connect the TV A/V cable and LNBF coax cable from your satellite dish, the dish must already be aimed and pointed to the target satellite or satellites, power up the STB and do another factory default, turn off and power down (switch off) one more time, power back up and begin the setup and sat scans.

In the receiver Menu, under "System Info," verify the new file you just downloaded, it will be listed under the "S/W version" description. Make sure the "Autoroll" feature is set to "on" in the "System" Menu settings, you can also turn "off" the "Key Update Message" in the Menu, otherwise you will see a onscreen message everytime it rolls new keys, you don't want this to happen especially if you are recording.

In the "System Settings" menu, set the "Channel NO." to "SID" so that it can properly identify, organize and number all the channels according to the satellite service provider's channel line up. All the other settings are basic and straight forward, just follow the User Manual that came with your receiver or search the Captive Works forums on this web site for Instructions/How to Guides.

Last, after the setup and satellite scanning, you must "enable the patch," with the receiver and TV on, select a scrambled channel to view, next, on the remote control, press the "F1" button, you will see an "H" on the receiver front panel display, then press the zero "0" button 3 times, you will see the zero's display as you enter them and then you will see a display on the TV screen "Patch Enabled."

By repeating this step, you can reverse the patch to "Patch Disabled."
Just make sure it's "enabled" so that it can decode scrambled channels.

It usually takes a few minutes to roll keys, when it does, the picture will pop up unscrambled and you will be watching TV.

One last thing, after the initial upgrade when the keys roll for the first time, it's been said that you should turn off and reset the STB, turn back switch off, wait a few seconds then turn on and let it boot up. It should come up to the last channel you were just viewing.

That's it, you're done, enjoy!

NO RISK NO GAME

Re: Ivana Try these steps a little more help

Ivana

these are Exhaustive Receiver Steps, I suggest you print them out and read very careful if you were near Los Angeles I would come over and help you out!!!!

process is very easy but when put down in paper looks like it's hard but really not.

ABSOLUTELY FIRST AND FOREMOST

Captive Works Released 2 versions of the CW600S, a Standard receiver and a Premium receiver. THIS HOW TO IS ONLY FOR PREMIUM RECEIVERS! Loading any standard receiver files to your premium receiver can possibly damage the receiver beyond repair. To identify what type of receiver you have, look at the front panel on the right hand side of the receiver. You should see the CaptiveWorks logo followed by CW-600S. If you have a PREMIUM receiver, then you will see the word PREMIUM under the CW-600S. If the word PREMIUM is not found on the front right side of the receiver then you have a standard receiver. If you have a STANDARD receiver, then you need to check the How To's in the STANDARD section found here.

DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!

If you do not have the proper cable, then no amount of setting changes or software will allow you to download the updates you need. The serial cable you need is called a Null Modem Serial Cable. This cable uses the serial communications port on your computer. Most websites provide the correct cable with the purchase of a receiver. If you did not receive one of these cables when you purchased your receiver then they can be purchased at your local RadioShack, Best Buy, or Circuit City as well as numerous online sites including several of the site sponsors. I do not recommend using the serial cable from another receiver or device unless you are absolutely positive that it is as Null Modem Serial Cable. The other common type of cable is a simple straight through serial cable like what is used with the Fortec and Pansat receivers. The cables look the same but have internal differences.

There are some users whose computer does not have a Serial Port. For these users, you will need to purchase a USB to Serial adapter cable. These cables can be found in many places on the internet as well as many computer savvy shops around town. It is important to verify that the cable you are using is compatible with the operating system you have. Many cables have been reported to have problems when being used with Windows Vista. This does not apply to all cables. Please check to be sure that the cable you are thinking about purchasing, will work with your operating system. Purchasing the wrong cable can lead to many problems later.

When downloading files, ensure that you are obtaining the correct files for the receiver you are using. CW600S Premium files are different from CW600S Standard files. Putting Premium files on a Standard receiver or vice versa could render your receiver inoperable. In the event that you have already done this, please refer to the following guide for assistance.

Once you have ensured that you have the correct cable, you need to download several files from the site. Each of the following links contain software critical to properly updating your receiver. DOWNLOAD ALL OF THE FOLLOWING SOFTWARE EVEN IF YOU DON'T THINK YOU WILL EVER USE IT. Each download will be a .zip archive. You will need to open this archive and extract the file/s that it contains. These files will be best placed in their own folder in your My Documents folder. For instance My Documents/Premium Receiver. If you are not using Windows XP or Windows Vista, you will need software to open these archives. The 2 most common programs for this are WinZip and WinRAR. Check the following location for info on obtaining WinRAR.

CW600S PREMIUM FACTORY SOFTWARE
This file is a zip archive that contains 2 files, CW600PV1.09_Reocrder_2_20_07.bin and CX-LoaderV3.01.bin. These files are for PREMIUM RECEIVERS ONLY! Loading these files onto a Standard receiver may result in a permanently damaged and inoperable receiver. These files will be used to help clean out the receiver as well as restore it to its factory condition in the event that you ever need to revert. This specific file will allow the receiver to work with the CW100R, a digital recording unit designed to work with STB’s.

CAPTIVEWORKS V1.06 LOADER
This is the software that you will run on your computer to allow you to transfer the updates you need, to your receiver. At the time of this writing, V1.06 is the current working version and is safe to use with USB to Serial cables.

MOST RECENT SOFTWARE UPDATE

Most of the users on this site are here for this software. These updates are software updates that are not supported by Captive Works. These updates allow the receivers to use D!sh and B3V channels. This is done through hexadecimal "Keys". The software updates make the receiver capable of using these "Keys" while usually automatically updating the key information for you. This feature is called Auto Roll. At the time of this writing, the most current software update was "CW600PV1.73.bin". From here on out, these updates will be referred to as "bin files". You will need to check the FILES ONLY section for the CW600S Premium to know which file you need. When new updates are available, these are usually the first sticky at the top of the page.

Once all files are downloaded, extract to a folder and separate into sub folders. You will be glad you did this later.

This process is one that has been tested by a number of users (including myself) to help ensure smooth operation of your receiver. Following these steps EXACTLY will ensure that you are properly updating the software on your receiver. The process that follows has been worded to be very detailed. Please read everything carefully before attempting to update your receiver.

If you choose to use a USB cable to update your receiver, please check the USB to Serial Cable How To, and ensure that your settings are correct and that your cable is working before proceeding.

Boot Mode and Standby Mode

Depending on the type of connection you are going to use, you are going to have to use one of 2 modes to update the receivers software. Those users who are going to connect the Null Modem Serial Cable directly to their computer will need to use Boot Mode. Users who are using a USB to Serial adapter are REQUIRED to use Standby Mode.

Boot Mode

To place the receiver in boot mode, turn the power OFF using the power switch on the REAR of the receiver.

Press and hold the FRONT power switch while turning the power back on from the REAR power switch.

The word boot should show on the front display.

Continue holding the FRONT power button for a moment longer, then release it.

Standby Mode

USB cable users MUST put the unit into standby mode to update the receivers software. This is done by simply turning the unit off with the remote or power switch on the FRONT while the unit is turned on. Standby mode with either display the current time (ex. 12:34) or will display a series of dashes (ex. --:--).

Finding Your COM Port

Before loading any files onto your receiver, you will need to know what the designation is for the Serial Port you are going to use. USB users should have already done this if you followed the steps outlined in the USB to Serial How To.

These instructions are for WINDOWS XP users. All other operating systems will be similar.

Click start.

Right click on My Computer

Select Properties

In the new window click the Hardware Tab

Click Device Manager.

In the new window, click the plus sign beside "Ports (COM & LPT)"

You are looking for a line that says Communications Port. Beside of that line should be (COM#) where # is the actual port number. For instance, in the picture the communications port is COM 1. Remember this number, you will need it later.

**Note** Some computers have more than one serial port. If this is the case for your computer then you will need to memorize all numbers that show for COM#. In the event that COM1 doesn't work, then you will need to try the other numbers that are listed.

Properly Loading New Bins

Thanks again to skittles for pushing this method.

If you have not done so already, download and unzip the latest software update from the FILES SECTION.

First you need to do a "Factory Default"

Turn the unit on.

Press Menu on the remote.

Press OK on "Installation"

Scroll down to "Factory Default.

Click OK

Select "ALL"

**Note** The receiver will now ask if you wish to save your current settings. I currently don't recommend this because I have seen problems with the receivers I test after loading the saved settings. Please use at your own risk.
Confirm the Factory Default

USB users, place the receiver in Standby Mode.

Normal users, place the receiver in Boot Mode.

Open the V1.06 Update Software.

Click the Yellow Folder Icon and locate the Factory Bin CW600PV1.09_Reocrder_2_20_07.bin
(If you have not downloaded it, it can be found here.

Select "Download S/W"

Select the COM port that your cable is connected to.

Click Start

**Note** You should now see a yellow progress bar. Depending upon the settings on your computer and the amount of resources you have available, this should take between 30 seconds and 5 minutes. If your progress bar remains at zero, you will need to stop the transfer, check your settings and try again.

Once the unit has finished loading the factory software, turn the unit off and back on from the rear switch. (This is critical for USB users).

Do a Factory Default as described earlier.

Put the unit into boot mode, (Standby mode for USB users).

Find and select the newest receiver software update.

Once you have finished the Factory Default, your box is updated but you still have a few things to do.

You will need to change the antenna settings for your specific setup and scan your satellites for channels. Once you have properly adjusted the settings for your antenna setup and scanned your channels, you will need to ENABLE THE PATCH. If you do not enable the patch, then the update you just did will be no good to you. TO ENABLE THE PATCH PRESS F1 (WHITE KEY) ON THE REMOTE FOLLOWED BY THREE ZEROS. When you press F1 on the remote, the LCD on the receiver will display an H and then the numbers you press. If you did it correctly, there will be a message on the screen to the right that says "Patch Enabled". Allow the receiver to sit on a channel for a few minutes. This will allow it to "Roll the Keys". Once the proper key has been "rolled", a "Key Update" message will be displayed that shows which keys were changed and what the new keys are.

TROUBLESHOOTING
If you have trouble with your receiver the there are a few steps you should take before asking for help in the forums.

Usually small problems, like no audio, video or scrambled channels, can be solved by a reboot. Turn the receiver off and back on from the rear of the receiver.

For scrambled channel problems, if a reboot does not work, make sure that the patch is enabled. Open the menu, go to accessories. If it says Key Menu at the bottom then the patch is enabled, if it does not, then you need to enable the patch. Exit out of the Menu, Press F1 then 000 to enable the patch. If the patch is enabled and you have tried a reboot, then wait for 15 minutes to allow the keys to roll. If keys still do not roll then the update you placed on your receiver may be out of date or there may not be a working update at the moment. The other possibility is that you may have a settings problem. Use the Hardware section to help you determine what your settings need to be.

f you are having problems loading an update, check and be sure of two things, the file is a CW600S Premium File and recheck your settings. Go back through the procedures for the update you are trying and make sure that you have followed them step by step.

If you are still having problems after trying these solutions, then your problem may require a helping hand. Use the following link as a template to help word your question/s and post them in the Premium Receiver Chat section. The more information that you give us to help, the quicker we can resolve your problem.

Good luck CASPER7
